I tested the WHOOP 4.0 vs Apple Watch Ultra 2 battery in real-world conditions – and one lasted way longer

by | Oct 23, 2023

Battery life is major factor in play when deciding which fitness tracker a consumer should go with. So how do two of the leading brands, WHOOP and Apple Watch, fare in this department?

I tested the Ultra 2 and WHOOP 4.0 battery life in a head-to-head battle over the course of week until both devices died, and you may be surprised about how long each lasted.

Test Setup

  • To make this battery test as fair as possible, I made sure both devices were fully charged by the time I started the test on Sunday morning at 9am.
  • Each night around 9pm, I logged the current battery percentage of each device.
  • Both devices were worn to sleep.
  • My Apple Watch stayed on silent, but does get push notifications and phone calls to it. The display was also set to ‘always on’, and GPS and location services remained on as well.
  • The WHOOP doesn’t have any customizable options.
  • I use alarms on both devices each morning.

Day 1: Sunday

This is the first day of my battery test for both devices. I completed a few workouts, which would be considered moderate use for both devices.

Ultra 2 Usage

  • 1.1 mile walk
  • 10 minute row workout
  • 61 minute weightlifting
  • 5,598 steps
  • Used flashlight for 2 minutes
  • Set a few timers throughout the day
  • Asked Siri 3 questions

WHOOP Usage

  • 1.1 mile walk
  • 10 minute row workout
  • 61 minute weightlifting

End of Day Results

  • Apple Watch Battery = 77%
  • WHOOP Battery = 91%

Day 2: Monday

I work from home at a desk job, but try to get as much movement in as possible.

Ultra 2 Usage

  • 10 minute row workout
  • 39 minute weightlifting
  • 4,248 steps
  • Set a few timers throughout the day
  • Asked Siri 7 questions

WHOOP Usage

  • 10 minute row workout
  • 39 minute weightlifting

End of Day Results

  • Apple Watch Battery = 34%
  • WHOOP Battery = 74%

Day 3: Tuesday

Another day at my desk job and the demise of the Apple Watch Ultra 2. That didn’t take long! However, the WHOOP is still going strong.

Utra 2 Usage

  • 10 minute row workout
  • 60 minute weightlifting
  • Set a few timers throughout the day

WHOOP Usage

  • 10 minute row workout
  • 60 minute weightlifting
  • 20 min walk

End of Day Results

  • Apple Watch Battery = 0% at 5:10pm
  • WHOOP Battery = 45%

Day 4: Wednesday

With the Apple Watch still dead, I used just the WHOOP. However, I do a 3 day on, 1 day off workout cycle, so this day I didn’t use the WHOOP for much other than my alarm and a quick walk.

WHOOP Usage

  • 1.6mi walk

End of Day Results

  • Apple Watch Battery = 0%
  • WHOOP Battery = 34%

Day 5: Thursday

Had a relatively active day with a few types of various exercises. The WHOOP 4.0 continue to truck along, but I suspect the battery won’t last much longer.

WHOOP Usage

  • 1hr 15min weightlifting
  • 10min row workout
  • 1hr 4 min of stacking wood

End of Day Results

  • Apple Watch Battery = 0%
  • WHOOP Battery = 16%

Day 6: Friday

The WHOOP 4.0 is barely hanging on!

WHOOP Usage

  • 45min weightlifting
  • 10min row workout

End of Day Results

  • Apple Watch Battery = 0%
  • WHOOP Battery = 1%

The WHOOP 4.0 battery died on Saturday at 2:18 am while I was sleeping. Resulting in a whopping 137 hours of battery life with moderate use.

Concluding Insights and Battery Performance

The WHOOP 4.0 dominated in battery longevity, lasting a notable 137 hours or nearly 6 days with moderate use.

In contrast, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 exhausted its battery in just over 2 days, or 56 hours.

While the Apple Watch offers a range of features, it sacrifices battery duration. WHOOP 4.0’s focused functionality gives it an edge in battery performance.
